His mon was derived from the Chrysanthemum (Kiku) and sea or water (Sui), hence Kikusui.

I give a modern explanation of this by describing it this way. The top half of our mon is the Chrysanthemum and the bottom half is the road leading to excellence, with the circle round the outside representing a circle of friends.
